Political activist Shamoon Jaleel, popularly known as Lucas Jaleel, was freed from police detention on Sunday, after spending 10 days in custody following his arrest at a protest in Male’ City.
Lucas was one of 10 individuals detained on May 13 during a protest against the incarceration of two reporters from ‘Adhadhu’. He was taken into custody for 10 days the following day.
Lucas' attorney, ex-North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi), verifies that he was freed from custody on Sunday.
Multiple confrontations occurred between law enforcement and demonstrators during the May 13 protest, which was organized by ex-President Mohamed Nasheed.
Ten demonstrators – eight males and two females – were apprehended by law enforcement. Seven were freed from custody, while three remained detained on charges of obstructing police and not complying with their orders.
Lucas, a faithful assistant to Nasheed, was the final individual to be freed from custody.
The demonstration occurred following the imprisonment of two Adhadhu journalists, Mohamed Shahzan and Leeval Ali Naseer, on May 12 for contempt of court due to breaching a controversial broad gag order issued by the Criminal Court.
Shahzan received a 15-day prison sentence, while Leevan got a 10-day sentence.
Leevan completed his sentence on Friday, whereas Shahzan is still incarcerated.
A gag order was imposed in a criminal case involving Adhadhu CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and editor Hassan Mohamed for allegedly making false claims of adultery in a documentary released by the news outlet on March 28.
The blanket gag order released on May 10 clearly forbids any party from distributing the documentary, from openly or covertly discussing the video's contents, or from making any remarks associating any of the defendants or the victim with the documentary.
