Ali Azwar, Managing Director of State Electric Company (STELCO), has declared that plans are in progress to initiate a significant project focused on securing a sustainable electricity supply for residents of the Greater Malé area.
In an interview with state media outlet PSM, Azwar emphasized that the demand for electricity in the Malé region is rising at an extraordinary rate, noting that the surge in tall buildings and increasing population density have led to a notable annual rise in energy usage.
Azwar highlighted the necessity of executing a major project to address the swiftly increasing demand and affirmed that the required efforts in this direction are presently underway.
Malé and Hulhumalé have recently faced ongoing power interruptions, including total system collapses causing widespread blackouts, along with prolonged outages impacting the densely populated residential buildings in Hulhumalé Phase II.
A significant power outage impacted Malé and Hulhumalé last Saturday, with electricity fully reinstated after three hours and thirty minutes. The event ignited public backlash against STELCO, especially since it happened just a day after the planned upgrades at the Hulhumalé powerhouse were finalized.
