The government has declared a five-year nationwide initiative focused on decreasing tobacco consumption throughout the Maldives.

Health Minister Geela Ali announced on Sunday during a joint press conference featuring four ministries to commemorate World No Tobacco Day 2026, celebrated this year under the global theme “Unmask the Appeal.”

Geela mentioned that one out of every four Maldivians smoke and highlighted that the government has undertaken “significant measures” to address tobacco and nicotine dependency, such as the generational tobacco ban implemented last year for individuals born in 2007 and beyond, along with the prohibition on vape use and possession by the end of 2023.

"These actions have been implemented for the benefit of the citizens," she stated.

Geela also mentioned that 84 percent of fatalities in the Maldives are due to issues associated with tobacco consumption.

Nonetheless, based on official health statistics, the 84 percent figure pertains to all fatalities attributed to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular conditions, cancers, and chronic respiratory illnesses. Using tobacco is a significant risk factor for these diseases, yet it does not directly represent 84 percent of all fatalities.

She stated that the new national initiative will take place over the next five years to further decrease tobacco consumption and urged the public and civil society groups to back the effort.

Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu announced that all schools in the Maldives will soon start offering information to students, teachers, and families regarding the hazards of tobacco and nicotine products.

The messaging for this year’s World No Tobacco Day, provided by the President’s Office, the Health Ministry, and the First Lady, focuses on safeguarding children and youth from nicotine dependency and creating a tobacco-free future.
