Ahmed Nazim stepped down from his role as Deputy Speaker of Parliament just before lawmakers were slated to review a motion aimed at his ousting.

The resignation was revealed during the parliamentary session on Sunday, marking the conclusion of Nazim’s time in the chamber’s second-highest leadership position.

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced to members that an extra session will take place tomorrow to decide on future actions, including electing a new deputy speaker.

A motion requesting Nazim's removal was presented to Parliament on 14 May.

The Parliamentary Secretariat had previously indicated that the issue was being handled in line with constitutional guidelines and parliamentary processes.

In a statement released after his resignation, Nazim condemned the decision to oust him from his position and dismissed the claims presented as reasons for the action.

As he stepped down from the deputy speaker role, he asserted that the allegations made against him were baseless and voiced his discontent with the procedure that resulted in the suggested vote.

Parliament is anticipated to commence the procedure of choosing a new deputy speaker in the next sitting.
