The Supreme Court has authorized the continuation of an appeal concerning a death sentence issued to an individual who was a minor during a deadly stabbing event in Malé 13 years prior.
The case concerns the killing of Hussain Waheed, Ma. Aisha, who was mortally wounded by a stab near her home on the evening of December 24, 2013. Accounts from that period reveal that Waheed passed away after suffering an eight-inch stab wound to the chest. Two persons, each younger than 18 during the event, were recognized as the supposed offenders.
In 2015, the Juvenile Court imposed a death sentence on both individuals after all nine legal representatives of the victim requested the death penalty. On April 30, 2019, the death penalty was upheld by the High Court.
On September 22, 2022, in a noteworthy turn of events, the mother of the victim sent a letter to the Chief Justice, expressing that although all heirs had originally pursued the death penalty for both defendants, she now did not want the sentence to be enforced against one of the individuals.
She stated that her choice is a response to a personal appeal for forgiveness from the person involved. The mother expressed her readiness to testify before the court to affirm her statement if the judiciary needs more information.
The ongoing Supreme Court proceedings result from an appeal submitted by the other party involved in the case. This new application pertains specifically to the second defendant. Owing to the sensitive nature of court cases involving minors, additional specifics about the case have not been disclosed.
