Sh. Milandhoo is experiencing a significant number of fish deaths, as the lagoon surrounding the island has changed from blue to black.
Clips of the concerning events have spread rapidly on social media.
It indicates that a significant portion of the island's lagoon has become cloudy, with groups of dead fish observed drifting above.
The event occurs weeks after the finishing of dredging operations to construct an airport on the island.
Certain internet users associated the unclear waters with the dredging.
Aiman Latheef (Piko) stated that the harm extends beyond the island’s lagoon to its mangrove lake as well.
Ibrahim Mihad, the president of the Milandhoo Council, thinks the fish die-off is connected to climate change.
However, he mentioned that the impacted region is near the airport project location.
"We think this is connected to climate change." The region that has gone black is the area recently reclaimed. The cloudiness has greatly diminished now. “Yet it persists to exist, in a way,” he stated.
The council indicates that fish keep appearing dead in the region.
