Dr. Hussain Sunny Umar, facing allegations of sexually assaulting multiple children, is set to appear in Criminal Court on Wednesday afternoon.
Sunny Umar is set to stand trial for four charges brought against him. As per the schedule of the Criminal Court, the hearing behind closed doors is set for 2 pm on Wednesday.
According to Article 42 of the Constitution, trials are required to be held publicly. Judges can mandate closed hearings in rare situations.
Situations concerning children are some of the instances where hearings may be held in private, to safeguard the welfare of minors. Even if a hearing is private, the verdict has to be announced in a public session, although the court can keep some information confidential in juvenile and family cases.
Sunny faces three charges for deliberately engaging in sexual contact with a child's body, presented in three different cases. These consist of accusations of child sexual assault starting at age seven and continuing until August of the previous year, along with two other assault incidents. Every crime results in a prison term ranging from 10 to 14 years.
He has been accused of obstructing justice by not providing his phone to the police after a court mandated that he do so. The standard penalty for this crime is one year, seven months, and six days in jail.
Furthermore, he has been accused of offering misleading information to a government entity. He reportedly fabricated SIM card details and provided misleading information to law enforcement. This crime results in a punishment of four months and 24 days.
Sunny has been in custody since January and will stay detained until the trial concludes.
