On Wednesday, a man received a nine-month prison sentence for disrespecting the Criminal Court.
Ali Adhuham, from Raiyvilaage, A.A. Thoddoo, received the sentence for continually ignoring the court's orders and demonstrating disrespect during the hearings. The court stated he persisted in confronting the bench even after multiple warnings.
Contempt of court signifies actions that hinder the justice system or compromise the authority and respect of the court. It involves interrupting proceedings, yelling, mistreating or intimidating a judge or court personnel, willfully ignoring court directives, deceiving about proceedings, or disseminating information that undermines the court’s integrity.
According to the Courts Act, judges can promptly act against those who disrespect the court. Decisions like these can be made immediately at the hearing, without needing a separate prosecution.
On Wednesday, Adhuham received a nine-month sentence for contempt, along with sentences in two other cases where the Prosecutor General’s Office accused him of willfully entering a restricted area and having someone else's belongings.
The two incidents involve illegal entry into Aminiya School during its construction phase and the theft of 18 wooden planks.
