Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef emphasized that nations need to collaborate to combat scams and fraud facilitated by technology.

Addressing the 35th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Vienna, Austria, the Prosecutor General stated that technological advancements are occurring swiftly, and the crimes conducted with these tools are rising correspondingly. He cautioned that fraud networks aided by AI are growing internationally, rendering one-sided responses insufficient.

Referencing regional statistics, Abbas indicated that approximately USD 18–37 billion is lost each year due to fraudulent activities in Southeast Asian nations, while highlighting that similar offenses occur in the Maldives as well.

Prosecutor General Abbas emphasized that preventing fraud should not be seen as the sole duty of individual nations. "The world must cease pretending we can achieve this independently," he stated, urging for enhanced intelligence-led collaboration among law enforcement bodies.

He mentioned that nations have unequal access to the technologies and resources required to identify and examine advanced fraud networks.

Consequently, Abbas highlighted the significance of resource-sharing and collaborative efforts, stating that smaller nations like the Maldives rely on partnerships with more affluent, resource-rich countries.

The Prosecutor General stated that the Maldives is prepared to collaborate with international partners and will offer complete assistance to foreign authorities carrying out scam-related inquiries concerning the Maldives.

As stated by the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Maldives will take part in panel discussions during this year's conference, which continues until Friday. Throughout the sessions, Abbas engaged with high-ranking officials from different criminal justice systems and had in-depth conversations about enhancing collaboration and reciprocal support.

The delegation for this year features Senior Public Prosecutors Mohamed Abdulla, Ashfaaq Naeem, and Ahmed Aiman Ali.
