Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, the interim Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), stated that the outcome of the Hithadhoo North parliamentary by-election reflects the public’s desire for freedom, honesty, and accountability from political leaders.

His comments followed the victory of MDP candidate Abdulla Sodiq in the by-election held on Saturday, where he defeated People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Ahmed Saeed.

In an interview with Dhauru after the vote tally was completed, Ghafoor noted that the result demonstrated the will of the voters, despite what he described as intense efforts by the government to secure the seat.

“Today, the true voice of the Maldivian people has been revealed. The government went to great lengths to win this election, but our candidate still secured a substantial victory,” Ghafoor stated.

He added that the people are seeking transparency, sincerity, and loyalty from their leaders and that these qualities are now becoming more prominent.

Ghafoor also accused some MDP members involved in the campaign of facing pressure during the election. He claimed that certain activists received suspension notices from their workplaces while participating in campaign activities.

Expressing concern over these claims, Ghafoor emphasized that employment within the state should be accessible to all citizens equally and not be influenced by political loyalty.

“They cannot behave in this manner. The Maldivian state guarantees equal employment rights for everyone,” he asserted.

Despite these issues, Ghafoor affirmed that the MDP would not be discouraged and would continue its political efforts.

“The people have spoken. The message is loud and clear,” he said.

With Sodiq’s victory, the current number of MDP members in the People's Majlis has risen to 13.

Ghafoor welcomed the election result and expressed confidence that Sodiq would actively represent the party in Parliament.
