On Wednesday, the Islamic Ministry received the land designated for building the largest mosque in the Maldives from the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
The agreement for the land handover was signed by Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed representing the Ministry, and Managing Director Brigadier General (Retired) Ali Zuhair representing HDC.
The significant mosque is set to be built in the zone linking Hulhumalé Phase II and Phase III.
Concerning the project, Minister Shaheem mentioned that the new mosque will be constructed as a multi-functional complex. Alongside the primary prayer hall, the complex will feature a Quran Museum and various other necessary facilities.
The Islamic Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Rajhi Company to obtain funding for the extensive development.
The building of the Maldives' biggest mosque in Hulhumalé is among the main promises made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his presidential speech. The government intends to begin construction on the project coinciding with the 900th anniversary of the Maldives’ adoption of Islam. Thus, the Islamic Ministry aims to begin construction in September this year.
