South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem has commended former president Mohamed Nasheed on his overwhelming success in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election.

In a post on X, Meekail mentioned that he reached out to Nasheed by phone to extend his congratulations on the significant win. He also highlighted his dedication to fostering unity within the MDP and collaborating with renewed vigor to guarantee the party's success in the 2028 elections. Meekail reiterated his commitment to supporting the party’s general membership.

The election that started at 14:30 concluded after 21:00 tonight. Initial findings released thus far put Nasheed ahead.

The election was largely seen as a competition between the two internal factions of the MDP. With Nasheed winning the first significant internal election since rejoining the MDP after departing to create 'The Democrats,' the distribution of power within the party has changed again.
