The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has released a Yellow Alert for the central atolls, indicating deteriorating weather, with heavy rain, strong winds, and turbulent seas.
The notification released on Friday indicates that unfavorable weather is anticipated from Baa Atoll to Vaavu Atoll between 12:45pm and 17:00pm. The region is expected to experience significant rainfall and thunderstorms throughout this time.
The Met Office cautioned that wind speeds might hit 40 miles per hour in gusts, leading to extremely rough sea conditions.
With ongoing heavy rain causing flooding in various regions of the country, officials have advised the public to stay alert. Winds reaching 40 miles per hour may uproot trees and harm roofing systems, leading to appeals for residents to adopt required safety measures.
Due to the worsening weather conditions, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released a public safety alert. To minimize potential flood damage, residents are encouraged to position sandbags at doorways to stop water from entering houses and relocate valuables and electrical devices to elevated areas.
The community has been encouraged to turn off idle electrical devices and safeguard locations susceptible to electrical short circuits. Property owners are also encouraged to strengthen roofing sheets and prune trees on their premises to reduce possible wind-induced damage.
The Met Office and NDMA have consistently advised seafarers to take great care. Specifically, small vessel operators have been warned to refrain from traveling during the Yellow Alert phase. Individuals making necessary trips are advised to confirm that all safety standards are fulfilled.
Officials emphasized the need to verify the most recent weather updates before leaving, confirm that communication devices are functioning, and to wear life vests during the entire trip.
