The United Kingdom has formally acknowledged the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the Maldives National University's (MNU) School of Medicine, representing a major milestone for medical education in the Maldives.

The acknowledgement from the UK's General Medical Council (GMC) indicates that MNU's MBBS program graduates can now request to take the necessary licensing exams to follow medical careers in the United Kingdom.

Since its inception, the School of Medicine has aimed to enhance academic standards and guarantee that its program fulfills global criteria.

After an in-depth examination of the curriculum and associated documents, the GMC concluded that the program meets its recognition criteria.

Previously, Maldivian graduates wishing to take the UK's Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) exam were evaluated separately.

The updated acknowledgment simplifies the procedure and offers graduates a more defined route to career prospects in the UK.

As per MNU, the application for recognition was made following increased enthusiasm among alumni for acquiring international training and work experience.

The medical program follows the curriculum of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and has been modified to fit the Maldivian healthcare system, with technical assistance from the Malaysian institution.

Along with obtaining GMC recognition, MNU has gained a spot in the World Directory of Medical Schools, boosting the global reputation of its medical programme.

The School of Medicine started its activities in 2019 and has since graduated four classes.

University authorities state that initiatives will persist to seek recognition in additional nations to enhance prospects for forthcoming Maldivian physicians.
