Former President Mohamed Nasheed won the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s chairperson election on Friday, securing 69 percent of the votes based on initial results.
Nasheed returned to lead the primary opposition party after defeating South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem.
Individuals who registered with the party by April 22 could participate in the election.
Nasheed, the initial chairperson of the party, secured his return by obtaining 20,943 from 30,363 valid votes - 69 percent of the overall ballots.
He was especially strong in surveys in L. Atoll, GDh. Atoll, Th. Atoll and F. Atoll.
