The Housing Ministry announced Saturday that parents applying for flats on behalf of individuals with disabilities will no longer need to provide proof of guardianship.

The possibility for parents to apply rather than the individual with a disability was established on May 20 of this year.

The ministry states that parents registered with NSPA as guardians can now apply without needing to submit extra documents to verify their status.

Prior to now, government family housing featured a distinct category for individuals with disabilities, enabling them to apply directly for apartments. The ministry subsequently broadened the choice to enable parents to submit the forms for them.

This adjustment is intended to simplify the procedure for individuals who struggle to complete the forms on their own, in addition to applicants younger than 18. Flats will be allocated to individuals registered with NSPA as the caretaker.

Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib stated in a post on X last April that the government is striving to improve the circumstances for those with disabilities.

The ministry stated that the modification aims to tackle the difficulties encountered by individuals with disabilities in obtaining housing, and that permitting parents to apply will provide considerable support to families.

The government has provided special allowances for individuals with disabilities in determining the necessary duration of residence in Malé. The ministry observed that the residency prerequisite for eligibility has been decreased.
