The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has stated that the by-election for the position of Dh. Meedhoo council president, held on Saturday, was conducted peacefully and securely. HRCM explained that it monitored the election as part of its mandate to oversee human rights protections and assessed whether the process was free, fair, and transparent.
The commission noted that voting took place smoothly and in an orderly fashion, praising the police for their support of the Election Commission, as well as the efforts of candidates, political parties, and voters in fostering a democratic environment.
However, HRCM raised a concern regarding accessibility, pointing out that neither of the two polling stations in Meedhoo had facilities that were easily accessible for people with disabilities, despite other arrangements being adequate.
The election was won by Suha Ibrahim, a candidate from the ruling PNC. She competed against Mohamed Shahid from the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA). A total of 1,049 eligible voters were registered, and provisional results indicated that Suha won convincingly.
Three ballot boxes were used in the election, all of which were won by Suha. Out of 985 votes cast, Suha received 529, Shahid obtained 449, and seven votes were invalid. Suha's victory was secured by a margin of 80 votes.
As a result of this election, the PNC now holds an outright majority in the Dh. Meedhoo council.
