On Friday, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih extended his congratulations to former President Mohamed Nasheed on winning the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairmanship election, emphasizing that the party's priority now is to hold the government accountable.
In a message posted on social media, Solih highlighted that the election once again showcased the strength of internal democracy within the MDP and urged members to unite and move forward together.
Nasheed secured the chairperson position, defeating Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem and another MDP member, Ibrahim Mohamed (Wade).
Congratulating Nasheed, Solih acknowledged the significant political responsibilities ahead for the party. He expressed confidence that Nasheed, with his experience, will lead efforts to hold the government accountable.
Solih also congratulated Meekail, whom he supported during the campaign, praising him as a promising future leader in Maldivian politics. During the campaign, Solih actively supported Meekail, participating in campaign events and publicly endorsing him.
This election marked another chapter in the relationship between Solih and Nasheed, who had worked closely within the MDP for many years before their political differences led to a split during Solih’s presidency. These disagreements eventually resulted in Nasheed leaving the party ahead of the 2023 presidential election, a move many believe contributed to the party’s defeat.
Nasheed later rejoined the MDP and ran for the chairmanship with the backing of former MDP chair Fayyaz Ismail.
With the election concluded, senior party leaders are increasingly emphasizing the importance of unity as the MDP prepares for upcoming political campaigns and the 2028 presidential election.
