The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported a notable rise in dengue fever cases across several atolls in the Maldives. According to data released for May 2026, the number of dengue cases increased from 648 in April to 778 in May.

The agency's statistics also show that, besides dengue, instances of viral fever have increased across all atolls except for Haa Alif and Gaafu Dhaalu. Additionally, many atolls are experiencing a rise in common cold cases. The HPA further noted an uptick in diarrhea and vomiting cases in the Greater Male’ area, as well as in Baa, Kaafu, Alif Alif, Faafu, and Gnaviyani atolls.

The HPA has urged the public to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures against mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue. These include wearing full-body clothing, using mosquito repellents, and keeping doors and windows closed during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

To prevent mosquito breeding, the agency advised against discarding containers that can collect water around homes or on streets and stressed the importance of cleaning areas where stagnant water may gather.

For those feeling unwell, home care recommendations include resting and drinking nutritious fluids such as coconut water, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and soup. While paracetamol can help manage fever, the HPA emphasized seeking medical advice if a fever lasts more than three days or if severe weakness occurs.
