On Tuesday, the Maldives urged the global community to ensure Israel is held responsible for its human rights abuses in the occupied Palestinian territories and East Jerusalem.
Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed, the Maldives' Permanent Representative to Geneva, presented the national statement during the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council.
Dr. Salma, representing the Government of Maldives, unequivocally denounced the Israeli military actions targeting the Palestinian population and the hindrance of humanitarian assistance.
The Maldives called on Israel to completely adhere to its responsibilities under international law and guarantee the safety of civilians and civilian infrastructure. The declaration also urged for the secure and unobstructed provision of humanitarian aid.
The statement stated: “Israel persists in openly breaching international law, and the global community must strive to terminate its culture of impunity and ensure it is held responsible.”
The Maldives reiterated its plea for establishing circumstances that support a fair, enduring, and peaceful solution to the Palestinian issue, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the Palestinian people's right to self-determination.
In conclusion, the Maldives reiterated its steadfast dedication to halting Israel's unlawful activities and advocating for the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State founded on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem designated as its capital.
