A man from Bangladesh has been detained for reportedly having a altercation with his girlfriend.

The individual, named MD Shahawat Hossain, was arrested on charges of being involved in a physical confrontation with his girlfriend. It is uncertain if the woman is from the Maldives or another country.

He was brought before the Criminal Court, which directed that he be held in custody for 15 days. As per the remand order, Shahawat is residing illegally in the Maldives; his visa lapsed in July of last year.

Shahawat refuted the accusations of assault. His defense contended that the issue was a private quarrel between him and his girlfriend, asserting that no altercation had occurred.

An irregular migrant involved in a fight could be charged with both criminal offenses and immigration violations under two different laws.

Engaging in fights is a violation of the Prohibition of Intimidation, Possession of Dangerous Weapons and Sharp Objects Act, along with the Penal Code of Maldives. Being a non-native does not relieve an individual from criminal responsibility. Simultaneously, staying in the country without a valid visa is considered a distinct crime.

The participation of an undocumented immigrant in a criminal matter is viewed as a significant reason for deportation. In these instances, authorities usually detain the alleged offender and probe the attack. If found guilty, immigration officials might remove the person from the country after the sentence is completed, or sooner, based on the situation. Such individuals are typically prohibited from returning to the Maldives.
