Sheikh Ismail Mohamed, widely recognized as one of the most influential religious scholars in the Maldives, has passed away at the age of 85.

Born in Dh. Meedhoo in the 1970s, Ismail became the first Maldivian student to graduate from the Islamic University of Madinah.

Throughout his illustrious career, he authored 40 religious texts, served as a judge, and significantly contributed to the advancement of Islamic education across the Maldives.

In 2025, the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) awarded him the country’s first-ever honorary doctorate in acknowledgment of his lifelong dedication to Islamic scholarship and education.

His death has elicited condolences from prominent leaders, including President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who expressed his sadness at the news.

On social media, President Muizzu praised Ismail’s efforts in promoting Islamic education, including his role in facilitating overseas educational opportunities for many Maldivian students. He also highlighted that, besides his own achievements, Ismail mentored numerous individuals who continue to serve the nation.

Additionally, Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed described him as “a distinguished religious scholar who made valuable contributions to Islamic education and upbringing in the Maldives.”

His funeral prayer is scheduled to take place after Duhr prayers at the Islamic Center.
