The government has provided financial support to 10 island councils to establish nurseries under the Five Million Tree Planting Programme.
This initiative is a major pledge by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to plant five million trees over five years, officially launched on Environment Day 2024.
According to the Environment Ministry, over 5.8 million tree pledges have been received so far, with more than 1.6 million trees already planted nationwide. The ministry plans to plant an additional one million trees this year.
The project emphasizes sustainable tree planting and infrastructure development. Grant agreements signed on Tuesday will enable councils nationwide to establish nurseries as part of this effort. The first round includes these 10 islands:
- HA. Kelaa
- Sh. Milandhoo
- N. Kendhikulhudhoo
- R. Innamaadhoo
- B. Maalhos
- AA. Mathiveri
- M. Mulah
- Th. Kinbidhoo
- GA. Dhaandhoo
- Thinadhoo City
Additionally, the government announced plans to build two nurseries in L. Gan and one in Hulhumale’ Phase II as part of the broader five-million-tree initiative.
