The Criminal Court is set to start the trial of two firms, Island Health Solutions Pvt Ltd and Pioneer Maldives Pvt Ltd, as well as two physicians, based on accusations of extensive tax fraud.
The lawsuit involving Pioneer Maldives Pvt Ltd, owned by Dr. Ikleel Shareef and Dr. Ali Abdulla Latheef, has been officially filed in court, with hearings set to commence next week. The two doctors are also investors in Island Health Solutions Pvt Ltd.
Accusations against Island Health Solutions Pvt Ltd
- Three charges of deliberate tax evasion pursuant to Article 64 of the Administrative Taxation Act.
- One charge of hindering state operations according to Article 533 of the Penal Code.

Prosecutors claim that the companies intentionally avoided MVR 20,200,401 in taxes from 2020 to 2022 by providing inaccurate data in their income tax returns, in contrast to the amounts calculated by MIRA based on real income.
The Prosecutor General’s Office stated it will pursue a penalty of MVR 40,400,802, which is double the sum of the purported evasion, if the accusations against the companies are substantiated.
Prosecutors stated that the persons were indicted due to their leadership positions. Dr. Ikleel is the principal shareholder of Island Health Solutions and Pioneer Maldives, whereas Dr. Ali Abdulla Latheef possesses a 50 percent interest in Island Health Solutions and took a significant role in overseeing the firms during the COVID‑19 pandemic. Pioneer Maldives is another business where Dr. Ali Abdulla Latheef has an interest.
