The Fuvahmulah City Outreach Centre of the National Centre for the Holy Quran was officially opened on Friday evening.
The inauguration took place during a special ceremony in Fuvahmulah, attended by the State Minister for Islamic Affairs, Uz. Abdulla Saudhan, and the Deputy Mayor of Fuvahmulah City Council, Mohamed Liraar. Senior officials from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and the Fuvahmulah City Council also participated in the event.
Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed stated that the opening of the outreach centre will facilitate the expansion of Quran Hifz (memorization) programs in the city and will lead to an increase in the number of teachers. He also mentioned that the design for the Fuvahmulah City Islamic Centre has been finalized and that the proposed plan has been shared with the City Council for feedback.
The Minister further explained that once completed, the Islamic Centre will serve as the new location for the National Centre for the Holy Quran. He added that the current Quran Centre building will be converted into a Waqf property, with the revenue generated used to support various religious activities in Fuvahmulah.
The newly opened Fuvahmulah Quran Centre includes five classrooms, a prayer room, a Hifz exam room, an auditorium, a library, office spaces, and a meeting room.
A key policy of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is to establish branches of the National Centre for the Holy Quran on all inhabited islands of the Maldives to promote Quranic education. As part of this effort, the Ministry has already begun establishing branches in 16 islands nationwide.
Under the current government, support for Quranic initiatives has been significantly increased. The National Quran Recitation Competition is now funded through the national budget and has become one of the country’s most prestigious events, offering the highest-value prizes in its history.
