Majority of Maldives under weather alerts with rough seas and thunderstorms forecast through the night

The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a white alert for heavy rainfall across a large part of the country, followed by a yellow alert later for central atolls.


 


The white alert is in effect from 9:00 pm to 3:00 am, covering the area from Haa Alifu Atoll in the north to Laamu Atoll in the central Maldives. The Meteorological Office forecasted heavy rain and thunderstorms, with winds ranging from 19 to 24 mph and gusts reaching up to 40 mph in thunderclouds.


 


A yellow alert has also been issued for regions from Baa Atoll to Vaavu Atoll, warning of intense rain and thunderstorms, with gusts of up to 45 mph. This alert is active from 10:45 pm to 2:45 am.


 


The forecast for Saturday night predicts showers, with periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms across various parts of the country.


 


Wind speeds are expected to vary considerably:  


 


- Southern atolls: 3-13 mph  


- Other regions: 10-20 mph  


- Thunderstorm gusts: up to 36 mph


 


Sea conditions are also expected to worsen. Seas will be moderate in the southern atolls, moderately rough in other areas, and may become strong during heavy rain and gusty winds.


 


The Meteorological Office has advised seafarers and travelers to exercise caution, as adverse weather conditions are expected to continue throughout the night.
