Law enforcement officials report that no arrests have been made so far in connection with the attack on Hassan Zareer, the parliamentary representative of Mathiveri constituency.

The assault on Zareer occurred in Male’ on Sunday. Zareer informed Sun on Monday that he was doing well, but refused to disclose any details, mentioning the active police investigation.

On Tuesday, a police spokesperson informed Sun that an arrest has not yet been made in the case.

Zareer, a politician who notably switched from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to the currently governing People’s National Congress (PNC) three years ago, experienced a comparable attack in 2023.

Zareer was at the Habibi Café and Bistro located in the Galolhu area of Male’ City when a group of five men assaulted him.

The event occurred at approximately 03:30 am on May 1, 2023.

Zareer suffered head injuries during the attack and was admitted to ADK Hospital.

Charges were brought against three individuals in the case, among them Ibrahim Abdulla (Gabbarey), a member of the national council of the MDP.

However, the court exonerated the three, following Zareer’s withdrawal of his testimony. He also called on the police to free Gabbarey, whom he referred to as a “close friend.”
