The Maldives Health Professionals Union (MHPU) has expressed concern over the increasing trend of health workers being verbally insulted and harassed on social media, often accused of negligence whenever a medical incident occurs or an investigation is initiated.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the union emphasized that healthcare workers continue to operate in difficult conditions across many hospitals in the Maldives. MHPU highlighted several systemic challenges faced by staff, including a shortage of professionals, inadequate facilities, and political interference in hospital operations and treatment decisions.

The union acknowledged that patients and their families have the right to seek clarity regarding tragic incidents during medical care. However, it stated, “Personal attacks and intimidation against any health worker, whether on social media or elsewhere, before an impartial and independent investigation is completed, should not be tolerated in a civilized society.” The statement also pointed out that in the small Maldivian community, such attacks often extend beyond the individual to their families and colleagues, causing broader social disruption.

MHPU voiced concern that relevant institutions are often slow to disclose information following tragic healthcare incidents, which leads to increased public dissatisfaction and the spread of misinformation. The union stressed that it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies to conduct independent investigations into healthcare incidents while safeguarding the dignity and safety of health workers.

Furthermore, MHPU called on authorities to strengthen protections against insults and abuse directed at health workers, emphasizing that such measures are vital for defending the rights of both patients and professionals and for maintaining public trust in the country’s healthcare system.

The union urged the Ministry of Health and healthcare institutions to prioritize independent investigations of clinical cases and to provide accurate, balanced information to the public promptly, ensuring transparency and accountability.
