On Sunday evening, Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib announced that the government plans to expand services in Hulhumale' Phase II by permitting the use of privately allocated land for non-residential purposes.

During a ceremony celebrating the completion of the new lifts in the Hiyaa towers, Muthalib explained that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) lacks enough land under its control to fulfill all the service requirements of the rapidly growing city.

He mentioned that over 2,000 plots have already been assigned to residents from the second and third phases of Hulhumale'.

“Our current understanding is that not every service needed by residents must be provided on land controlled by HDC,” he stated.

Muthalib also noted that land allocated to residents in Hulhumale' is presently restricted to residential use. However, the government believes these plots should be opened for commercial development so residents can benefit directly from their land.

“Private investment should be encouraged to develop Phase II land for various purposes such as preschools, clinics, shopping centers, or other businesses,” he said.

He emphasized that allowing commercial use of land in Phase II would foster the creation of businesses and jobs, boost economic activity, and enhance essential services.

Consequently, the government aims to create opportunities for residents to utilize their land in ways that promote prosperity and productivity.
