Maldives now provides heart care services comparable to those in developed nations, stated Senior Cardiology Consultant and Subspecialist Dr. Miqdhaadh Shareef during the 10th anniversary celebration of the National Cardiac Centre, an event attended this morning by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.

Speaking at the event held at Dharumavantha Hospital, Dr. Miqdhaadh highlighted the significant progress the centre has made since its establishment, transforming cardiac care in the country within just ten years. He pointed out that in the past, patients had to wait several days abroad to get results from vital heart tests, a situation that has now been completely resolved.

Dr. Miqdhaadh emphasized that the centre now offers many advanced treatments that were previously unavailable in Maldives, marking a major advancement for the nation’s healthcare system. He also noted with pride that all cardiologists working at the centre are Maldivian, a milestone that has bolstered public confidence in local specialists.

“I am very proud to say that all the cardiologists here are Maldivians,” he said, adding that the growth of local expertise has been key to gaining the trust of patients who once had to travel overseas for procedures like angiograms.

He further stated that the expansion of cardiovascular services in Maldives has greatly benefited patients and fundamentally transformed the country’s healthcare system. Over the years, the centre has increased its patient capacity, expanded the range of procedures offered, and introduced modern equipment and facilities, significantly reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.

The National Cardiac Centre was established on June 5, 2016, during the presidency of former President Abdulla Yameen. During today’s celebration, the First Lady unveiled the centre’s new name and logo, officially renaming it the National Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences.
