During a clean-up initiative organized by the Male' City Council, 37.7 tonnes of garbage was removed from different locations in Vilimale'.
The city council announced today that the cleanup event took place last Saturday aimed at safeguarding the environment and preserving cleanliness in Vilimale'. The initiative resulted in the removal of 37.7 tonnes of waste.
Male' City Mayor Adam Azim and Vilimale' Councilor Ibrahim Samah took part in the event.
Members of the Women's Development Committee and high-ranking city council officials joined them, along with all employees of the Vilimale' section. The Vilimale' Police Station also sent representatives to participate in the effort.
The city council stated that the initiative highlighted that a lot still needs to be accomplished to keep the island's beauty and cleanliness preserved.
Although a significant amount of waste has been removed through this initiative, the council stressed that community involvement is essential to maintain the island's cleanliness over time.
Littering and discarding waste in public areas and the ocean has been an ongoing problem in Male', Vilimale' and Hulhumale'.
Last month, the Housing Development Corporation reported that during their waste management efforts, they removed 521 metric tonnes of waste from public areas in Hulhumale' from February to May this year.
