The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development has announced that 75 percent of construction on the Thilamale’ Bridge is complete. This 6.7-kilometer bridge will connect Male’ City with Vilimale’, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu.
The ministry reported on Wednesday that the primary focus of current work involves casting and installing segments for the bridge deck. Of the 1,222 segments required, workers have cast 90.4 percent and installed 72.9 percent.
Additionally, the ministry indicated that progress is being made rapidly on the development of roads in Gulhifalhu that will connect to the bridge.
Concurrently, efforts are underway in Thilafushi to install revetments as part of the project. The 6.7-kilometer bridge connecting Male’, Vilimale’, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu incorporates the world's tallest precast segments, measuring 8.2 meters in height and 25.3 meters in width.
Funding for this initiative comes from a USD 100 million Indian grant and a USD 400 million concessional credit line provided by India’s Exim Bank.
The contract was awarded to Afcons Infrastructure of India in August 2021. The company anticipates the completion and opening of the Male’-Vilimale’ segment of the bridge for public use by the close of this year.
