First Maldivian developmental pediatrician Dr. Fazna passes away

Dr. Aminath Fazna, the first Maldivian physician to focus on developmental pediatrics, has died at the age of 47.


Sun has found out that Dr. Fazna died on Thursday while undergoing cancer treatment in Male’. Her funeral will take place at Masjid al-Ta'aawun (Aasaharsa Mosque) following tonight's Isha prayer.


Dr. Fazna finished her medical schooling and specialized training at the National University of Malaysia and at the University of California in the USA.


Upon finishing her education, she came back to the Maldives and started working as a Developmental Pediatrician. Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) reported that she began seeing patients at the facility in October 2024.


Dr. Fazna, utilizing her knowledge in child development, significantly contributed to the evaluation and diagnosis of children with autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and different learning challenges.



Healthcare providers who collaborated with her, as well as the families of the children she cared for, are grieving her death and have conveyed deep sorrow over the loss of Dr. Fazna.
