A year after their previous visit, flamingos have returned to Sh. Funadhoo. Around the same time last year, these birds arrived on the island, adding color to the lagoon with their presence.

Council Chairperson Mohamed Adil told Sun on Saturday evening that the flamingos have been frequenting Funadhoo for several days. He mentioned that the birds typically appear during the June-July season.

Adil added that the council is keeping an eye on whether the public is disturbing the flamingos, emphasizing that they are a protected species in the Maldives.

“Nobody will harm them here,” he said.

Photographer Mohamed Thasneem (Thanni) captured stunning photos of the flamingos in Funadhoo last year and shared them on Facebook. He mentioned that the flamingos stayed for about three months during their first migration to Funadhoo in 2021, but their visits have become shorter in recent years.

In 2021, a large flock of flamingos migrating to the Maldives for the first time attracted nationwide attention, especially in sunny weather. These birds are most commonly seen in Sh. Funadhoo and H.Dh. Kulhudhuffushi.

It is important to note that flamingos are a protected species in the Maldives, and authorities regularly advise the public not to harm them.
