The Male' City Council states that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has not provided a chance to address worries regarding the postponed municipal services for Hulhumale' residents.
The council stated that HDC is failing to deliver crucial residential and municipal services to the residents of Hulhumale'. Consequently, Mayor Adam Azim and the councillors sought a meeting with HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair, but the corporation denied the request, according to the council.
Azim and the councillors went to HDC on Wednesday after complaints that residents of the Vinares, FDC, and Hiyaa flats were not getting the municipal services they deserve.
Azim stated that the council will persist in contacting HDC until the issue is settled.
“We visited the HDC MD to talk about the absence of municipal services for residents in the flats.” “Yet, we did not have the chance,” he stated.
The handover of municipal services from HDC to Male' City Council has faced a delay exceeding two years. Conversations about shifting all municipal services commenced in early 2022, during which time the sitting president, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, held the position of mayor.
The council resolved to present a proposal to the President’s Office for assuming control of municipal services in Hulhumale', emphasizing that the enlarged artificial island is administratively classified as a district of Male' City.
Three days after the current government assumed office, the transfer of municipal services in Male' and Hulhumale' commenced, and the associated MOU was signed on January 4 of the previous year.
The Finance Ministry subsequently revealed that HDC would stop offering rural services within a month after the MOU was signed. Work is currently paused, and the municipal services of Hulhumale have not been handed over to the council yet.
