Aminath Roona, charged with planning an attempt to import 1.5 kilograms of drugs into the Maldives, has been detained while awaiting her trial's outcome.

The 29-year-old was previously identified by the Maldives Police Service as the supposed mastermind of the smuggling operation.

Roona was apprehended on April 17. After multiple extensions to her remand, the court on Thursday ruled that she should stay in custody until the trial is concluded.

Another individual, 25-year-old Alya Sharsa Naseer, was detained in relation to the case.

Based on previously released court filings, 1.5 kilograms of suspected drugs were found in the luggage of a traveler who arrived in the Maldives following Roona's purported directions. Throughout the inquiry, the chief investigating officer stated that Roona was the main organizer of the attempted importation.

The two defendants face charges for crimes linked to the import, possession, distribution, and trafficking of narcotics. Initial court documents indicated a temporary seizure of 1.8 kilograms, but the current investigation centers on 1.5 kilograms of the material.

At their first court appearances, Roona's defense sought access to police body camera recordings. Earlier court hearings also observed that Alya is undergoing treatment for depression.

According to Section 104 of the Maldives Narcotics Act, the importation or exportation of a controlled substance is considered a serious criminal offense. A conviction results in a mandatory life sentence and a fine between MVR 100,000 and MVR 10 million.
