Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has explained that recent notifications about deductions for Raajje Transport Link (RTL) services resulted from server maintenance conducted by the Bank of Maldives (BML). The company clarified that these notifications pertain to payments for ferry trips completed on earlier dates.
This explanation comes amid increasing public concern after many customers reported receiving SMS alerts indicating a MVR 3.25 deduction from their bank accounts, despite not using RTL services at the time. Several users shared their experiences on social media, noting they received these messages even though they had not traveled on RTL ferries recently, or sometimes not on the same day the notifications arrived.
Social media posts indicated the issue had persisted for several days, with some users expressing worry over what they believed were unexplained deductions.
One Facebook user commented, "I just received an SMS from my bank saying my card was charged MVR 3.25 for an RTL ferry today. The strange part is I haven't used an MTCC ferry service today—or for quite some time." Others voiced similar concerns and urged for an investigation to ensure transparency.
In response to these concerns, an MTCC spokesperson told the media that the notifications were related to server maintenance by BML on the RTL payment system. The official explained that such maintenance could cause delayed SMS notifications for transactions related to previous trips.
MTCC had previously issued a statement on July 16, informing customers that BML's server maintenance might lead to delayed SMS alerts for past RTL trips. The company apologized for any inconvenience and advised customers seeking more information to contact their hotline at 1650.
Raajje Transport Link (RTL) is a high-speed ferry network operated by MTCC, providing inter-island transportation across the Maldives. The service currently operates in 12 atolls.
