According to new data from the Police Anti-Scam Centre, last week saw a higher amount of money lost to scams than earlier this month.

Statistics indicate that MVR 325,485 was lost across 46 cases earlier this month, while MVR 365,626 was lost in 36 cases last week, representing an increase of MVR 40,141 despite a reduction in reported cases.

The Anti-Scam Centre additionally indicated that MVR 117,439.50 was retrieved last week. This amount is MVR 78,494.50 lower than the MVR 195,934 retrieved earlier this month.

Similar to earlier weeks, e-commerce scams continued to be the most prevalent, with 24 incidents noted. Last week, three scams related to currency exchange and two cases of fraud were reported.

Statistics published earlier this month indicate that 122 fraud cases were reported in June, which is a decrease of 35 compared to May. The loss in June was decreased as well: MVR 914,698, in contrast to MVR 2.27 million in May.

Out of the funds lost in June, MVR 598,678 was successfully retrieved.

Authorities have indicated that over MVR 33 million has been lost in more than 2,700 scam incidents reported across the country since last year.
