The Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage has initiated efforts to implement library services on all inhabited islands in the Maldives, signifying a significant advancement in broadening access to information and cultural resources throughout the nation.

During a discussion on PSM News, State Minister Shukrullah Shakeel announced that the Social Council has ratified the policy document detailing the establishment of regional divisions of the National Library. He remarked that guaranteeing access to library services for every citizen continues to be a significant priority for the administration.

"This is a very important goal for the government." "State Minister Shukrullah Shakeel stated, 'We strive to ensure that library services are available on every inhabited island in the Maldives.'"

The National Library has begun building new branches in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City, marking the initial stage of the nationwide expansion.

While the programme was underway, National Library Director General Fathimath Shiham stated that the policy framework was completed after discussions with over 100 stakeholders. She noted that an extensive survey carried out with local councils assisted in pinpointing the architectural and operational frameworks needed for the new libraries.

The library is an essential establishment. “It gives children access to reading resources and allows the community to obtain information,” she stated.

In its wider initiative to modernise and digitise library services, the government has introduced the Online Digital Report Collection, which serves as a central repository that brings together official reports onto a digital platform.
