A 63-year-old man from the Maldives has been detained on accusations of sorcery related to a case in the Feydhoo area of Addu City.

Based on the remand order released by the Criminal Court on Friday, investigators have provided adequate evidence suggesting his participation in the purported act. The materials submitted to the court consist of a police intelligence document, an incident document, and a photographic document.

In light of the submissions, the court mandated that he be held in custody for 15 days.

Sorcery is a significant and longstanding problem in the Maldives. This week's Friday sermon highlighted the topic, stressing that practicing witchcraft is one of the most serious sins in Islam and is considered an act of shirk.

Multiple people have been detained in previous investigations related to witchcraft. Nevertheless, officials still encounter difficulties because of the absence of precise laws and sufficient resources to probe these cases, even though Islamic Sharia outlines a distinct punishment for the crime.
