In June, the Maldives saw a reduction in cases of dengue fever, influenza, and diarrhea compared to May, as per the latest monthly report on communicable diseases issued by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
Even with the general enhancement, the agency cautioned that dengue spread persists in various islands and encouraged the community to keep implementing preventive actions.
HPA documented 652 dengue cases in June, a decrease from the 794 cases noted in May.
Cases of influenza-like illness dropped to 40,457 in June, down from 48,772 the prior month, according to the agency's surveillance program for acute respiratory infections and viral fevers.
Instances of diarrhea also decreased during this time, dropping from 4,726 cases in May to 4,442 cases in June.
As per HPA, 142 out of the 451 samples analyzed in June tested positive for influenza, increasing the total count of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases this year to 999.
The agency persists in urging the public to minimize mosquito breeding areas by eliminating stagnant water, engaging in community clean-up efforts, and utilizing mosquito repellents and protective attire, especially during twilight hours.
To help reduce diarrheal diseases, HPA recommended frequent handwashing with soap, safe food handling methods, and availability of clean drinking water.
Individuals who are unwell are advised to take time to rest, stay hydrated with beverages like oral rehydration solutions, soups, and fruit juices, and to consult a doctor if symptoms continue or escalate.
Health authorities additionally advised minimizing non-essential hospital visits, especially for children and expectant mothers, while promoting mask-wearing in healthcare settings.
