The Male’ City Council has submitted grievances to WAMCO regarding the increasing heaps of trash around the capital due to delays in waste collection after the recent fire at the company's Thilafushi waste management facility.

A fire erupted in WAMCO’s Thilafushi area on Sunday night and was put out the next morning.

In a statement released last Wednesday, WAMCO announced that sections of their Thilafushi location had been shut down because of the fire. Consequently, the company has been forced to cut down the volume of waste received from its transfer stations in Male’, Villimale, and Hulhumale.

Since that time, the council announced on Tuesday, waste has been piling up in roadways and community spaces. It highlighted that the city is encountering significant issues because there is no established system for disposing of waste gathered from streets, parks, and open areas.

The space utilized by the council for temporary dumping has reached capacity, and garbage has not been moved to Thilafushi for nearly ten days.

Eleven council members toured WAMCO and met with the HR General Manager, Mohamed Shan. Shan stated that he would speak with the company's managing director to seek a prompt resolution to the problem, as per the council. He also guaranteed that the landfill area would be operational again by the week's end and that a long-term solution would be implemented.

The council cautioned that if the problem is not tackled promptly, it may develop into a significant public health crisis, particularly due to the country's humidity and persistent monsoon rainfall. Councillors have determined that if the issue is not settled within the given timeframe, they will go back to WAMCO.
