Shareef named Chairman of Asian Bankers Association

Mohamed Shareef, CEO and Managing Director of Bank of Maldives (BML), has been named Chairman of the Asian Bankers Association (ABA).


For the first time in the board's history, a Maldivian has been designated to the role. BML announced that Shareef will assume the role of Chairman today according to the ABA board's resolution.


Shareef held the position of Vice Chairman at ABA from 2018 until 2020. BML stated that Shareef has assisted the organization in reaching their strategic objectives and strengthening the connection among regional member banks.


"BML informed the media that due to the confidence in Shareef's leadership, he was reappointed to the position in 2025."


Concerning his appointment as ABA's Chairman, Shareef expressed his gratitude for the confidence shown in him by the board and the member banks.


"I take great pride in serving as Chairman of ABA with my expertise." "I aim to strengthen the ties among the banks and, to enhance advancements in Asia's banking sector, collaborate as closely as possible with the board, Secretariat, and member associations," Shareef stated.


ABA Secretary Treasurer Dr. Darson Chiu acknowledged Shareef's dedication to maintaining the association's principles. BML reported that ABA's Secretary Treasurer assured he will fully support the efforts aimed at fulfilling ABA's developmental objectives and advancing member banks and the regional banking sector.


The ABA was established 45 years ago and is among the leading regional organizations that represent banks and banking associations throughout Asia.



The organization's primary focus is on engaging in policy talks with banking industry leaders, lawmakers, regulators, and global financial entities. They also strive to enhance the capacity and disseminate timely and relevant policies related to the industry to member institutions.
