The Maldives-Türkiye Preferential Trade Agreement (MTPTA) has officially come into effect, signifying a new phase in the economic and commercial ties between both nations.

The pact was formalized during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's official trip to Türkiye in 2023, intending to enhance trade and generate more opportunities for enterprises in both nations.

Economic Development and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed characterized the execution of the agreement as a significant achievement in bilateral economic ties.

He also associated the development with the common economic vision of President Dr. Muizzu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The agreement stipulates that preferential trade benefits will be granted for 75 types of goods, opening up new prospects for Maldivian exporters and enterprises.

A major expected advantage is enhanced availability of Maldivian fish products in the Turkish market, which boasts a population exceeding 85 million.

The deal is anticipated to offer Maldivian seafood exporters enhanced chances to access and grow in the Turkish market.

Simultaneously, Maldivian companies will receive priority access to Turkish goods and key commodities, which could offer additional sourcing alternatives and enhance trade connections between the two nations.

The government anticipates that the agreement will enhance bilateral trade, broaden business prospects, and promote enduring economic collaboration.

The Maldives and Türkiye have expanded collaboration in various fields, such as economic ties, defense, and education, with the recent trade agreement serving as an important addition to the strengthening bilateral relationship.
