The Male’ City Council has resolved to direct the appropriate authorities to implement the prohibition on smoking in public areas.
The matter was raised by Hulhumale North Constituency Councilor Fathimath Zahiyya (Zaya), who called on the council to encourage police to enforce legal measures against individuals smoking in restricted areas. Zaya mentioned that she still gets feedback from the public regarding individuals smoking in outdoor public areas, particularly in parks throughout the city.
She mentioned that smoking in parks presents health hazards to children and families who come to these spaces for fresh air and a secure outdoor atmosphere.
All 16 councilors in attendance at the meeting unanimously approved the decision.
Public concern is increasing regarding ongoing and unregulated smoking in places where it is legally banned. Many also convey annoyance that proper enforcement is lacking and that current legal standards are not being followed.
The administration has implemented various measures to regulate tobacco consumption in the Maldives, such as prohibiting vaping and raising taxes on tobacco items. Further increases in duties are anticipated, and a lifelong ban will be established to prevent tobacco consumption for individuals born from a designated year onward. The World Health Organization (WHO) has commended these actions in the past. A total of 37 nations across the globe have prohibited e-cigarettes, including the Maldives.
