President Dr. Muizzu has declared the world is failing to protect the lives of aid workers, despite their crucial, and vital role in serving humanity, whilst speaking on the occasion for World Humanitarian Day.

The president has affirmed his firm stance by standing in solidarity with the humanitarian workers, who endure risks for the sake of others.

Moreover, he has stated the need for relief workers has increased in times of crisis, such as in regards to the conflict in the Middle East, climate related crisis, displacement and world hunger.

He emphasised his point by shedding light on the collapse of humanitarian workers in Gaza, such as the intentional obstruction of humanitarian aid, blockades, as well as the violence against the relief personnel showing blatant violations to international law. He strongly denounces these unlawful actions, reiterating the Maldives’ stance in their unwavering solidarity to Palestine, whilst calling for an immediate, and permanent ceasefire.

He has remarked that small states are heavily reliant on a rules-based international order, as part of the Fourth Geneva Convention, thus Maldives remains consistent in their commitment to international humanitarian law, protection of civilians, as well as humanitarian personnel.

The president urged all countries to safeguard humanitarian work and adhere to the core humanitarian principles; neutrality, impartiality, as well as independence.

Amidst honouring said principles, the President paid tribute to those who confront danger in the pursuit of a greater cause, noting that their selfless sacrifices should be owed uncompromised protection and safety for all humanitarian personnel by the international committee.

Observed on 19th of August, World Humanitarian Law is commemorated each year in order to pay tribute to relief personnel, those who are harmed or killed in crisis areas and to show recognition to the brave individuals who risk their safety to deliver essential support.
