Increase in violence against women and children in July

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Social and Family Development, it is shown that there is a sudden increase in child neglect, alongside violence against women as of July 2026.


 


Reportedly, the ministry has attended a total of 228 cases of child neglect in July, indicating an increase since June, when it was reported to have been 14 cases.


 


Moreover, it was noted that amongst the different forms, the most prevalent form of abuse happens to be neglect, at 22 recorded cases. These cases pertained to 16 girls and six boys.


 


The second form of child abuse most frequently reported was sexual abuse, with 17 recorded cases in which 14 involve girls, as well as 3 cases involving boys. Additionally, the ministry recorded 14 cases of domestic violence against children, and seven cases of physical abuse.


 


In regards to the 15 other cases involving children reported, there were two incidents surrounding children running away from home, as well as four cases of school refusal.


 


Furthermore, out of the 54 gender based and domestic abuse incidents addressed by the Ministry, physical assault was the primary form, consisting of 27 cases involving female victims and five involving male victims, making physical abuse the most prevalent form of domestic abuse, with verbal abuse being the most common showing 12 such cases.


 


Police statistics indicate that 320 cases of domestic, as well as child abuse was recorded last year, representing a 25% increase from the number last recorded in 2024.
