Adhadhu News's digital equipment was seized on the 27th of April, due to the news outlet’s direct involvement in the case of Aisha, after which the court granted police access to the information stored on the confiscated devices.

Due to the documentary released by Adhadhu named ‘Aisha’ which brought attention to certain allegations made by a former presidential aide in concern to the abuse of power, as well as misconduct in the highest position in the government.

The documentary was the cause for a police raid on the Adhadhu’s office, where the equipment was confiscated. The Criminal Court has stated that the equipment cannot be returned back to Abadhu as the case is currently ongoing, and it could potentially compromise the active investigation as it unfolds.

CEO of Adhadhu, Hussain Fiyaz Moosa, as well as Managing editor Hassan Mohamed were brought in for questioning in March due to their involvement in the case, where they had their passports seized for three months.

In addition, the court placed an injunction in order to prevent Adhadhu from publishing any content in relation to Aisha, in retaliation Fiyaz filed a petition to have this order overturned. 

The hearing was scheduled on the 29th of June, on 9:15am, but was cancelled shortly afterwards with no reason provided as reasoning for the cancellation by The High Court, despite Fiyaz, as well as his legal team, along with Prosecutor General office lawyers being present in court.

Furthermore, two other journalists from Adhadhu were arrested and put in jail due to their link to the case, known to be Leevan Ali Naseer and Mohamed Shahzan.

Transparency Maldives has condemned these arrests as well as the actions against Adhadhu, labelling them a direct threat to the foundations of democratic governance.

The case has brought in significant international attention, with major foreign media outlets speaking on the topic, whilst expressing concern over the cause and effects of the situation.
