Police have released further details about a serious road accident in Hulhumalé Phase II on Saturday night, saying the crash occurred when a motorcycle collided with a pedestrian who was crossing the road to board a taxi parked by the roadside.
The accident was reported at around 21:04 near Vinares 7 on Hithigas Magu in Hulhumalé Phase II.
According to police, CCTV footage from the area shows the motorcycle travelling along Hithigas Magu before striking the pedestrian as she attempted to cross the road and get into a vehicle parked near Vinares 7.
An 18-year-old woman and a nine-year-old girl travelling on the motorcycle were injured in the collision. Both were taken to Hulhumalé Hospital for treatment, with police stating that the child remains in critical condition based on information received from the hospital.
Police also confirmed that the motorcycle was being operated by an individual holding a valid driving licence.
Videos shared on social media following the incident show a taxi stopped in the motorcycle lane, with the motorcycle lying on the road in front of it and blood visible behind the bike. The footage also shows the injured child unconscious and bleeding from the head as bystanders attempt to assist.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation.
