Authorities have recognized and penalized a person after a video emerged online depicting a motorcycle being operated dangerously on the Sinamalé Bridge.

The TikTok video that gained viral status depicts a person on a black Air Blade motorcycle precariously sitting to one side for about 10 seconds before straightening up.

In a statement released on Sunday evening, the Maldives Police Service indicated it had acknowledged the video depicting careless and irresponsible driving. Officials later recognized the motorcycle and the rider, leading to the vehicle being impounded for 30 days. The person's driving license was suspended, and a fine was levied, though the specific amount of the fine was not revealed.

Although the precise date of the event and the person's identity remain unverified, the action aligns with comparable enforcement actions. About a month ago, authorities impounded three motorbikes after footage surfaced of people reclining on their seats while speeding across the Sinamalé Bridge.

Historically, reckless driving and speeding have led to severe accidents and deaths in the Maldives, often involving young individuals in these events. The most recent enforcement action follows a severe accident in Hulhumalé Phase II on Saturday night that put a nine-year-old child in critical condition at IGMH.

Police statistics indicate that this year, traffic accidents rank as the second-most commonly reported type of cases, following theft. Authorities have reported a total of 1,984 accidents related to traffic thus far.
